Free Spirit: Stories of You, Me and BC is a major feature exhibition at the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the establishment of British Columbia as a Crown Colony.
Free Spirit is a fascinating look into BC's past, told through stories of individuals and communities: stories of struggle and innovation, determination and survival, fortune and failure, odd ventures and even odder people.
It's a journey through time and space. Like any great adventure, it starts with a party to send you off. We've invited 150 of BC's best, brightest and quirkiest people from the past and present. Once you are on the way you'll encounter all kinds of surprises: see flickering images from an enormous drive-in movie projector; hidden secrets and surprising facts; and be inspired, amused and awed by everyone who has made our province what it is: a place where free spirits thrive.
This celebration gathers a glorious crowd of 150 British Columbians - famous and infamous, living and dead - so you can explore their fascinating stories. If we've missed someone, let us know - there's always room for more.
A giant 1950s carbon-arc drive-in projector flickers to life with movie travelogues from the 1940s to the 1970s.
The story of BC told through an intriguing mélange of objects: totem poles, coins and tapestries, letters and journal entries, postcards, photographs and film.
Stories submitted to the People's History Project will be incorporated into the Free Spirit exhibition, so no matter how many times you visit, there will always be something new to discover about British Columbia and your place in it.
